NEW FEDERAL MANDATE REQUIRES USE OF ELECTRONIC LOGGING DEVICES BY 2017
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has officially published a mandate changing rules within the trucking industry regarding logging techniques in the Federal Register this past Friday, December 11, 2015. The mandate demands that trucking businesses transition from previous paper logging methods over to a system utilizing electronic logging devices (ELDs).
December 10, 2017 (just shy two full years away) is currently set as the date in which all drivers who are equipped with Automatic On-Board Recording Devices (AOBRDs) are required to update software to comply with the mandate. All drivers who log by paper must switch over and equip their fleet with ELDs by this date. Those who have purchased vehicles installed with AOBRDs before this date are considered to be “grandfathered” in, and have until 2019 to transition to the new software. Keep in mind that if you were using AOBRDs prior to this date, your company will only be receiving an update to its software. Early compliance will lead to less of an adjustment period later on.
