Electronic Logging Device Proposal Officially Published
A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) proposal that would require the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs) by drivers of commercial motor vehicles has been officially published. Under the proposal, ELDs would have to be installed within two years after publication of the final rule. The devices would have to meet specific standards, including being connected (“integrally synchronized”) to the engine of the vehicle so that driving time can be automatically recorded.
Only devices that are registered with FMCSA and appear on the agency’s website would be considered compliant with the proposal’s requirements. FMCSA is accepting comments on the supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking until May 27, 2014.
